It all started with the notification, posted by Beecher’s Handmade Cheese on their Facebook wall, of an upcoming auction. Not just any auction, but the Share The Love charity auction to benefit the Pike Place Market Foundation. An auction to benefit one of the best places to visit in Seattle, not to mention one of my favorite haunts? Sign me up!

Perusing the auction items, I came across the Beecher’s auction offering an 8-pound colossal cut of their Flagship cheese. Eight pounds?!? I promptly began calculating how much mac and cheese an eight-pound wedge of Flagship would make and the smoke started coming from my ears. Do you have any idea how much eight pounds of cheese is? Do you? Two teacup Chihuahuas weigh about eight pounds. A human head is about eight pounds. Thirty-five sticks of butter? Around eight pounds. A gallon of milk weighs about eight pounds. As do an Easter ham, a cannon ball, eight cans of soup, fifty cupcakes (mmmmm, cupcakes), a medicine ball, a large-mouth bass, and a StrasBurger. One thousand, five hundred and forty-one post-1983 (or one thousand, one hundred and sixty-six pre-1983) pennies weigh eight pounds. In other words, that’s a LOT of cheese.

So, of course, I bid on it immediately. Gluttony, thy name is Mac & Cheese Chick. Damn straight.

And I won.

Knowing that I might need someone one heck of a lot stronger than me to carry this monster wedge of cheese, I enlisted the help of my husband. Also knowing that he’s a lover of all things cheese and that Beecher’s offers samples, I figured he’d be in for the field trip. He was.

We arrived at Pike Place Market to a glorious afternoon (come on, it’s Seattle. Any afternoon with no rain is glorious) and after finding parking, headed for Beecher’s.

Even though it was well past lunchtime, the store was busy – not that I’d expect anything less.

The hubs was in cheese heaven, sampling so much cheese (and curds) that I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to drag him out of the store.

Then, the huge wedge of Flagship cheese arrived and was ceremoniously wrapped in a Beecher’s reusable bag. I took a moment to drool at the wonderful cheese counter, then we were off (I had to get the hubs out of there – they were running dangerously low on samples…).
